    What Factors Predict an Anesthesiologist’s Willingness to Proceed with an Anesthetic?

    Anesthesiologists are exposed to higher stress levels than many other physician specialties. They are also at an increased risk for developing mental disorders, alcohol and drug dependencies, sleep disturbances, and suicidal ideations. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to explore the factors that predict an anesthesiologist’s willingness to proceed with an anesthetic. The current study consisted of two stages. The first stage was developing a regression equation that was used to predict anesthesiologists’ willingness to proceed with an anesthetic. During the second stage, additional data was collected to test the model that was developed in the first stage. Six predictors were examined: the number of adverse events experienced by physicians, a recent history of errors, openness, agreeableness, imposter syndrome, and risk-taking. These predictors were tested across four different scenarios. In scenario 1, the significant predictors were imposter syndrome and risk-taking. In scenario 2, the significant predictors were openness and agreeableness. Finally, in scenarios 3 and 4, there were no significant predictors that were included in the final model. Practical applications and future studies are also discussed

    How Nationality, Weather, Wind, and Distance Affect Consumer Willingness to Fly in Autonomous Airplanes

    Several studies have examined passengers’ trust in human-operated systems versus autonomous systems. Prior studies have also reported cultural differences among individuals from India and the United States. The purpose of this study was to investigate how nationality, weather, wind, and distance affect passengers’ willingness to fly in autonomous aircraft. Participants included 161 volunteers from the United States and 137 volunteers from India. In 12 different conditions, participants were asked to rate their willingness to fly in an autonomous aircraft, given information about the weather (sunny, raining, or snowing), the wind level (no wind versus strong wind), and the flight distance (short flight versus long flight). These conditions were presented randomly to each participant. Subsequently, participants were asked qualitative, open-ended questions. The results indicated that Indian participants were generally positive about autonomous commercial flights, except in the most extreme conditions. American participants were generally negative about autonomous commercial flights, except in perfect conditions. Participants were also asked their opinions on advantages of automation, disadvantages of automation, and specific weather concerns. Implications for the findings are discussed

    Usability of Urban Air Mobility: Quantitative and Qualitative Assessments of Usage in Emergency Situations

    The purpose of these four studies was to determine participants’ willingness to support the use of urban air mobility (UAM) in response to natural disasters, along with the preferred locations to establish vertiports. Study 1 assessed the willingness to support using a mixed factorial design. The findings demonstrated strong, robust support for the use of UAM when responding to natural disasters. Study 2 worked to create and validate a scale that could assess vertiports\u27 current and proposed locations. The Vertiport Usability Scale was developed and shown to have strong psychometric properties to validly assess vertiport locations through a multi-stage process. Study 3 used the Vertiport Usability Scale to understand the most highly preferred locations for vertiports in three conditions from a multi-stage process: temporary disaster locations, permanent disaster locations, and permanent consumer locations. Study 4 was conducted using qualitative methods to complement the earlier quantitative approaches. Through an initial survey and follow-on interview, three themes emerged related to UAM in response to natural disasters and vertiports: 1) human involvement in UAM operations, 2) scenarios for usage, and 3) setup and deployment of vehicles

    Personal Safety Culture: A New Measure for General Aviation Pilots

    Safety culture has been a subject of research for over three decades and is now widely accepted as a critical component of organizational safety programs both domestically and internationally. Through the development of a healthy safety culture, aviation organizations can improve safety processes, reduce mishaps, and mitigate risk more effectively. This is done through the holistic team efforts of an organization’s members and the organization’s leadership. How about aviators who are not part of an organization? Is it possible to identify a personal safety culture defined outside of the traditional organization? And, is it possible to create an instrument allowing pilots to conduct a self-assessment of their personal safety culture? The current research seeks to address these questions by developing such an instrument to measure personal safety culture in General Aviation pilots. The first version of the instrument was developed using resources from prior research studies and a literature review of over 160 publications. It was initially sent to experts in civilian aviation, academia and military sectors who conducted face validity assessments. Once revised, the instrument was tested using a sample drawn from a large southeastern university in the United States. All pilots were required to hold at least a private pilot certificate. A factor analysis conducted on the results of the preliminary study indicate factors that account for a significant amount of the variance in the model. These results are presented with recommendations for application of the self-assessment and thoughts on future research

    Assessing Pedestrians\u27 Perceptions and Willingness to Interact with Autonomous Vehicles

    Our overall purpose will be to measure a pedestrians’ willingness to cross an intersection when an autonomous vehicle is simultaneously waiting to proceed. Recently, the automobile industry has experienced an explosion of efforts to enhance autonomous vehicle capabilities and set an eventual goal to remove human operators when viable. However, this new goal has created a gap in the research assessing the relationship between autonomous vehicles and their interaction with pedestrians. It is important to realize that routine interactions between pedestrians and automobiles will change dramatically. The pedestrian crossing the street can no longer receive a visual or auditory cue from the driver signaling a recognition of their presence and intentions to cross. Therefore, it is important to recognize the need for enhanced safety features encompassing a unique interaction. First and foremost, these features should be designed to enhance safety for both the pedestrian and any passengers traveling inside of the autonomous vehicle.
